Galle Fort was declared a World Heritage Site in 1988 as a unique exposition of “an urban ensemble which illustrates the interaction of European architecture and South Asian traditions from the 16th to the 19th centuries.” Whether on a ‘guided walk’ or strolling along the narrow streets, you will see clear and well-maintained evidence of the Dutch influence, despite some notable differences today, to 400 years ago. Other points of interest within the Galle Fort are, Flag Rock at the southernmost end. During the day, daredevil locals can be seen leaping into the water from the rock! Walk the ramparts at sunset, visit the lighthouse, the Dutch reform church, the old gate, Marine Archeological Museum, Sudharmalaya temple, and the restored Dutch Hospital.
